DOE Releases Details on Tribal Energy Summit to be Held May 4-5

On April 27, 2011, the Department of Energy released further details on the Tribal Energy Summit it will host on May 4-5. The Summit will be held at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott at 1700 Jefferson Davis Highway Arlington, VA. For those who have not yet registered, the registration form is attached and must be emailed by May, 1, 2011 to: registertribalsummit@hq.doe.gov. The detailed two-day schedule is also attached.

Speakers will include top level administration officials: Stephen Chu, Secretary, Department of Energy; Ken Salazar, Secretary, Department of Interior; Lisa Jackson, Administrator, EPA; Tom Vilsack, Secretary, Department of Agriculture (invited); Kim Teehee, White House Special Advisor on Native American Affairs; Heather Zichal, White House Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change; as well as congressional leadership.

For those unable to attend, the May 5 portion of the Summit will be streamed live at the above website (the May 4 portion is closed to the press thus will not be available on the Internet).

Discussion will not only focus on traditional renewable energy and oil and gas concerns but will also feature key agency officials who work with tribes on environmental clean-up and restoration, nuclear energy and nuclear waste, minority and small business contracting opportunities, and electricity transmission needs.

The Summit is the culmination of several Tribal Energy Roundtables which were held throughout the country (See our General Memoranda 11-011; 11-035; 11-038). The Department of Energy has indicated that it anticipates holding Post-Summit Roundtables throughout the country as well as future Tribal Summits.
